What would a bushveld adventure be without a game drive? Two daily game drives which are headed by a skilled, experienced ranger or tracker in order to give guests a better chance of viewing the camp’s wildlife up close and personal. Game drives are best at dawn and dusk and at Kilima Private Game Reserve and Spa both these options are available. Morning drives start before sunrise when guests gather for light morning refreshments before heading out to the buffalo and sable breeding project. While driving to the project’s basecamp, guests are likely to come across numerous other game en-route. The night drive starts shortly before sun set with guests convening at the main camp before heading out, while sipping sundowners en-route. Although game activity is usually bustling at this time of day, and a delight to see and experience, an added spectacle is watching the sun go down over the majestical Murchinson Mountain range from a characteristical African sun deck, which is shaded by one of the lodge’s most remarkable features – a striking, age-old Baobab. As darkness descends, the game viewing vehicle leisurely starts to make its way to the main camp while the professional tracker uses the on-board spotlight to pick out the glinting eyes of nocturnal animals. You can also enjoy walking on the Kilima walking path, see the animals from a better sight.

Safari trails are the best way to personally and physically interact with the African wild. Game walks give guests the opportunity to get up close to a variety of animals, as well as learn more about their instincts, behaviour and tracks. During safari trails, participants will be educated on the local fauna and flora including birds, different types of grass and trees.

Kilima Private Game Reserve and spa,Mulati Safari Camp offers a variety of daily bush walks – led by qualified and experienced rangers or trackers - catering for experienced as well as novice walkers. All safari trails start daily after breakfast and vary between a relaxing hour-long casual walk to a challenging, yet highly satisfying, overnight circuit. With the latter, participants get to sleep out in the African bush and fully appreciate the wonders of the African wild. Overnight sleeping arrangements are prepared on the camp’s renowned wooden sun deck which will also be pre-equipped with meals and beverages to make the stopover comfortable, enjoyable and safe.

Welcome to Kilima Private Game Reserve and Spa

In association with breeding and farming experts Gerrie van der Merwe and Gideon Joubert , Murchison Leisure through Schutte Boerdery Trust successfully breed scare game on the farms Kilima and Cotttondale, Gravelotte Limpopo. ( South Africa )

The sable breeding herd started off in 2008 with the acquisition of the famous record breaking purchace of the Western Zambian bull called Sam (44”), previously utilized by Mr Piet Warren and Mr Hannes Maree.

Several excellent females from the breeding herds of Big Five, Warren, Maree, Jacques Malan of  Lumarie and other top breeders were obtained and scientific  breeding for excellence took off.

The first sale of two heifers carefully selected for excellent features took place during Benchmark Game Breeders auction 2011 and both were regarded as outstanding breeding material by discerned breeders.

Daughters and sons of Sam are still used by some of the most well known breeders in South Africa.

In 2011 a further acquisition were made when the sable bull Assegai were obtained from well known  breeder Mr Chris Visser of Kimberley.

Assegai is genealogical directly or closely related to some of the most excellent specimens of the new sable generation namely:   Madala   48” and  Charlie    50”   (Piet Warren) , Tsunami   49” (Hannes Maree)  and Black Jack  48” (Tina de Jager)

At 3 years and 5 months Assegai’s horns were measured at over 45” and he is at present utilized with the daughters of Sam.

In 2007 the buffalo bull Mopani, spread 46”, boss16”, previously from Mr Barry Streicher a member of Trophy Breeders, were obtained to add certain characteristics to the buffalo breeding herds. Excellent results were obtained and more than 40 buffalos had since been sold to a wide spread of satisfied breeders.

We as the Murchison Group also decided to play our part in conserving the rhino, and to gather, interpret and share any and all info possible from the perspective and habits of our breeding herd of rhino,  for instance how they react and interact dehorned, how active the poacher blood trail in our area operate, what security measures we can invent or develop that can also serve other projects and the role we can play to penetrate or unravel toxic rhino syndicates.

This project is managed alongside and in accordance to the  supreme  knowledge and passion of Ms Annelize  Steyn, Mpumalanga Gamepark employee and rhino expert.

Outstanding breeding material were obtained when a number of pregnant rhino cows were bought from Sabi Sand and Timbavati reserves, thus including genetics of some of the largest or most dominant bulls from that area including Kruger Park.

During the latter part of 2012 and in the light of the dwindling numbers of Southern Roan Antelope we acquired three more breeding herds of excellent quality to clearly establish our commitment to their conservation. The latest addition to enhance our Roan breeding projects was the acquisition of a beautiful young pedigree bull from Mr Garry Donian of Gariep Eco Reserve. This young bull's grandfather was Merlin 34" and his father the grand bull Majestic 34,25".

African Buffalo or Cape Buffalo(Syncerus Caffer).

The African Buffalo reaches shoulder heights of up to 1.5m and a mass of 750kg.

Being a bulk grazer they are responsible for converting long grasslands into short grassy environments, conducive to other browsers with more selective feeding habits.

Mating occurs between March and May.Gestation period is 330 days. Single calves are born between January and April, With a distinct peak in February.

A wounded buffalo bull is regarded as most dangerous by hunters, and is one of the reasons why this animal is included into the so-called "big five".

An inhabitant of woodland Savannas, large herds of African Buffalo are encountered in the Kruger National Park.

In 2007 the buffalo bull Mopani spread 46" boss 16".

Mopani and a few buffalo's are seen at Kilima Private Game Reserve and Spa.

This day commemorates the national march by women on 9 August 1956 to protest against the legislation requiring non-whites to carry a document proving they had permission to be in a white area. Celebrations on this day highlight the role of women in society and opportunities available for future generations to contribute meaningfully to South African society.

South Africa Holiday Thirsty Warthog Sounder at Kilima Private Game Reserve and SpaThe collective noun given to a group of warthogs is a sounder. South Africa Holiday Thirsty Warthog Sounder at Klima Private Game Reserve and Spa, we have plently of these quick and nimble creatures visiting our waterhole.

The warthog (Phacochoerus aethiopicus), is a swine well adapted for all environments. They grow to about 65-84cm at shoulder height and weight between an average of 65 and 80kg. Males are slightly larger than females. They have a lifespan of 18 years depending on the environment and predation.

The warthogs name is derived from the presence of facial warts which are composed of thick skin and cartilage. Females have only a single pair of warts just below the eyes while males have an additional pair just above the tusks. This additional pair of warts is used to help protect their faces and eyes from an opponent’s tusks during combat.

Warthogs are mainly hairless; however the few hairs they possess have vital functions. There is a long, rough mane of hair along the back that is erected (called pilo-erection) when stressed. This is believed to make the small animal appear larger and more intimidating to a predator. White cheek whiskers, particularly present in juveniles, mimic the fearsome tusks of adults thus allowing them to warn off predators (even though piglets are in fact defenceless).

A warthog possesses two pairs of tusks. These tusks are modified canines that grow sideways out of the mouth. The upper tusks are considerably larger than the lower tusks, however, every time the warthog opens and closes its mouth, the lower tusks are honed and become razor-sharp.

Warthogs erect their tails when fleeing from danger. The erection of the tail is actually an involuntary muscular reaction during fright and flight. It acts as a ‘follow me’ sign for piglets and other members of the sounder.

As warthogs are typically hairless and lack subcutaneous fat, they are very susceptible to parasites and environmental conditions. Mud baths (wallows) are used to regulate body temperature and aid in parasite removal. Piglets are especially sensitive to cold and wet conditions. To prevent death due to sudden temperature fluctuations, a warthog sow will either excavate a burrow with internal shelf’s serving as “bunk beds” or will allow the piglet to sleep on her back to keep the young off the floor.

It’s absolutely everything I dream an African wedding should be. Hansie and Chrystal were married at a beautiful venue Kilima Private Game Lodge & Spa in the middle of the South African bushveld (real safari country to you and me!) in a ceremony full of love and raw emotion and buffalos, rustic style. Chrystal looks absolutely beautiful in her fishtail gown, with simple accessories perfectly complimenting her understated style. The sweet little touches in their outdoor ceremony on the deck at Kilima Private Game Lodge & Spa for the ladies feeling the African winter chill make it so much more romantic. And then on horseback to the reception venue, so beautifully styled in the natural colours and a hint of blush pink, making the most of the beautiful seasonal flowers to tie together their theme. Oh, and a herd of buffalos joined in at the drinking hole close to the reception. What a Magical moment.

Journeys Worldwide Best Game Drive Experian’s private game driveBasic rhino facts:

The rhinoceros is a large herbivorous mammal, whose distinguishing feature is their large size and the horn or horns that grows from the top of their head.

Some species, such as the black rhino and white rhino, have two horns, whiles others, such as the greater one-horned rhinoceros and the Javan rhino, have only one.

Rhino calves are born without horns.

Rhinoceroses vary in size depending on the species: The largest is the white rhino, which weighs between 4,000-6,000 pounds (1,800 - 2,700 kilograms). The Javan rhino is the smallest, weighing in at about 1,300 – 2,000 pounds.

Because of their huge size, strength and aggressiveness when attacked, rhinoceroses are not often hunted by animals other than humans, although young or sick rhinos are occasionally killed by lions or crocodiles.

Rhinoceros skin is very thick, up to 1.5 cm. It is tough but also quite sensitive to sunburn and insect bites. They often cover themselves in mud to protect their skin from insects and the sun.

Rhinos eat grasses, leaves, and the shoots of bushes and trees. Exactly what rhinos eat can depend on the species and specialization of its lip shape.

Rhinos have poor eyesight but Rhinos have poor eyesight of smell and hearing.

Female rhinos gestate their young for about 15-16 months and give birth to a calf every two to three years.

Male rhinos tend to be solitary animals, while females and young rhinos are more social, depending on the species.

Depending on the species and whether they are in the wild or captivity, rhinos can live between 35 and 50 years.

When going on a safari holiday in South Africa, one of the common yet still magnificent mammals you will come across is the giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalus). The giraffe stands between 3.5 and 5.5m high, weighs between 700 and 1400kg, with the average lifespan of 25 years.

At Kilima Private Game Reserve & Spa, on the 5th of July 2013, four of the gigantic graceful creatures visited the waterhole out onto which the lodge looks. Due to giraffes being browsers, they obtain moisture from the green leaves they eat and therefore will drink water every 2 to 3 days. The giraffe's brain can sit at about 5m above ground level and is situated about 2m away from the heart. When drinking water, they bend down and thus have specialised systems to control the blood flow to the brain preventing a huge head rush. These systems are found in the neck in the form of well adapted valves and networks of small capillaries that dilate and constrict to control blood flow to the brain.
